Global Health Workforce Alliance Releases Report on Health Workforce Needed to Reach MDG 6
On January 28 at the Second Global Forum on Human Resources for Health in Bangkok, Thailand, the Global Health Workforce Alliance launched a new report, “Will we achieve universal access to HIV/AIDS services with the health workforce we have?” The report examines the health workforce implications of trying to reach Millennium Development Goal 6: universal access to HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment, care, and support by 2015.
The new publication provides a snapshot of the current situation in five diverse countries: Cote d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Thailand, and Zambia. CapacityPlus lead partner IntraHealth International served as the secretariat for the technical working group that developed the report, which identifies major challenges hindering health workforce scale-up for universal access. The report offers areas of progress and innovation to build on as well as specific actions countries and global leaders should take to address critical gaps. CapacityPlus's James McCaffery was a member of the technical working group, and Wilma Gormley and Dana Singleton were key members of the secretariat.
Pape Gaye of IntraHealth gave closing remarks at the launch event. As he noted, “The endpoint in all of our HRH [human resources for health] discussions has to be health outcomes. The discussions this evening have made that link.”
