National Conference Focuses on Kenya’s Health Workforce
CapacityPlus staff made key contributions to Kenya’s first national conference on human resources for health (HRH), held December 7-9 in Nairobi. Attended by around 500 participants, the conference brought together a broad range of HRH stakeholders—including representatives from government ministries, the private sector, nongovernmental organizations, and faith-based groups. The conference theme focused on renewing commitment to the health workforce toward achievement of the Millennium Development Goals and Kenya’s Vision 2030 development blueprint.
Maurice Middleberg addressed the connections between global trends and themes in HRH and the Kenyan context during his opening session remarks, and also conducted a skills-building session on monitoring and evaluating HRH. Jim McCaffery led a panel on the importance of strengthening human resources management, while Dykki Settle co-led a skills-building workshop on gender-related considerations in the use of HR information.
Characterized by high energy and enthusiasm, conference sessions and events provided a platform for prioritizing HRH in national health strategies, sharing knowledge on successful and promising approaches, and discussing policy and administrative issues related to health workforce recruitment, hiring, deployment, and support, especially in the context of the planned governmental Devolution (decentralization) process as required by the new Constitution of Kenya.
