Mesrak Belatchew is a physician with an MSc in health management and an MPH. She has been in the field of public health for 10 years. She started her career in academics, then joined the international health nongovernmental organization sector. Her work includes active involvement in health systems strengthening with an emphasis on human resources for health as well as health care financing and health sector reforms, infectious disease prevention and control (mainly HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and avian human influenza), maternal, neonatal, and child health, family planning and reproductive health, research, and monitoring and evaluation. She speaks fluent Amharic (Ethiopian), English, and intermediate French and German.
